ABOUT VPNS
VPNS employs highly qualified teachers and teacher's aides. Our teachers have earned their preschool teaching credentials as mandated by the State of California. Parents assist the teachers in the classroom, participate in all aspects of the school and help the daily school routine.
BENEFITS
Vallejo Parent Nursery School provides the preschool child free play, arts & crafts, music, stories and both indoor and outdoor play under competent supervision. Older children are also offered a pre-academic program.
Through nature walks, gardening and field trips, the children are encouraged to observe and begin to understand the world in which they live. Most importantly, they learn how to share, wait their turn, get along with and be accepted by other children and interact with others, adults and teachers. Thus, your child is better prepared for Kindergarten.
PARENT PARTICIPATION
Parents must participate in the classroom at the assigned times in order to maintain a ratio of one adult to every five children as required by our license. The participation time is based upon the number of days a week your child attends. A partial co-op enrollment is available on a limited basis for parents unable to commit to a full co-op schedule.
Along with working in the classroom, each parent must perform a parent job of their choice each semester. These jobs include maintenance, clerical and other tasks necessary in operating a preschool.
Once a semester, each family is responsible for a Weekend Cleanup -- a general cleaning of the school. Each weekend, two families share these duties.
HISTORY
In 1950 a group of dedicated mothers formed the Vallejo Parent Nursery School. Through numerous fund raising efforts, the building we currently reside in was opened in 1966 and is the only cooperative preschool in Vallejo, and one of the finest facilities in Northern California - something all of Vallejo can be proud of.

OUR PHILOSOPHY
The cooperative nursery school is organized to benefit both parent and child. In this nursery school setting, your child learns how to work well with others, express him/herself creatively, cope with his/her emotions and participate in physical fun and activities with others.
Play is the work of children. Through play, children develop physically, emotionally, mentally and socially. This experience enables the child to discover him/herself in relation to the outside world.
Observing children helps parents better understand their nature and needs. They become reassured as parents, while obtaining new parenting skills that contribute to home guidance and learning. By observing their own children, parents notice their similarities to other children as well as their own child's unique needs, abilities and responses.

On average, the parent classroom schedule each month is:
- 2 - 3 days per month for Tuesday/Thursday class
- 3 - 4 days per month for Monday/Wednesday/Friday class
Parents are required to attend general meetings (usually the first Tuesday evening of each month) to review and vote on school business.
A cooperative nursery school is a non-profit organization in which parents administer, establish policy, direct the school procedure and participate in the daily school routine. In order for such a group to function successfully, it must be organized as a working unit.
